George, you win 1st prize in the race to apply the football analogy to this unsavoury matter. To take the analogy a little further, by consulting his colleagues as to whether he should resign, Welby got the dreaded vote of confidence from the board. From then on his multi million severance package and departure to a Johnstone's Paint Northern Premier league division 2 club was certain. But to be serious, and why not, the most concerning issue is Welby's reaction to the express ad hominem findings in Makin. Rather than falling upon his crozier, he avoided the question and asked a coterie of self interested underlings what should he do and was then loftily happy to say it wasn't a resigning matter because others said so. To me that is the core issue here, the deputy head of the CoE replacing personal responsibility with a straw poll amongst friends. What on earth was he thinking? To ask others in this was was enough to evidence that he wasnt fit for the office, nevermind the lack of judgement years ago.
Great column George. So interesting to have an insight into what might have gone on behind the scenes
Thanks Lindsay. Not often I know what I'm writing about ;/
